Appointment of security heads based on merit, Buhari tells Igbo in Anambra

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said that competence and merit were strong factors used in appointing heads of security agencies under his government.

Buhari, who spoke while addressing the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, traditional and religious rulers in the monarch’s palace in Anambra State during his campaign visit, defended the issues of marginalisation of South-East states, particularly in the security sector.He said his administration was fair to all regions since assumption of office on May 29, 2015.

The President, who said his administration had done a lot in the provision of infrastructure for the entire South-East region, including Anambra State, said: “On the issue of infrastructure, a lot of you that are here know that the last time the Enugu/Onitsha Road was done was during the PTF days and it was also done again from Enugu to Port Harcourt.“Marginalisation of South-East. Well, I am please that you have the courage to present issues about your constituency but I expect you to be more patriotic in your presentation.”

Also, he said his administration had successfully completed some projects in the South-East, particularly federal roads and started construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge valued at N302 billion in Anambra State, which was abandoned twenty years ago, the Zik Mausoleum and so on.

He expressed satisfaction that too many employable youths were now gainfully employed from N-Power programme, assuring that more people, particularly women, would benefit from the government if re-elected for second term in office.

Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a light aircraft which went missing over the Channel Islands.

The £15m Argentine striker, 28, was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu which lost contact off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night.

Cardiff City, which signed Sala from French club Nantes in a record deal on Saturday, said it was “very shocked”.

Guernsey Police said there was “no trace” of the Cardiff-bound flight and his family said they felt “desperate”.

Sala’s father, Horacio, told Argentine TV channel C5N, he heard the news from a friend.

“I didn’t know anything. I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I’m desperate. I hope everything goes well.”

Meanwhile, John Fitzgerald, chief officer of the Channel Islands Air Search, said the probability of finding anyone alive from the missing aircraft was “reducing very rapidly”.

“I think with the sea temperatures and the sea conditions the chances of finding anybody alive are reducing all the time,” he said.

“The sea temperatures are very, very cold and just sap the core temperature of anybody in the water very, very quickly.”

The plane left Nantes in north west France at 19:15 and had been flying at 5,000ft when it contacted Jersey air traffic control requesting descent, Guernsey Police said.

The plane lost contact while at 2,300ft and disappeared off radar near the Casquets lighthouse, infamous among mariners as the site of many shipwrecks, eight miles (13km) north-west of Alderney.

World’s oldest man” Masazo Nonaka dies in Japan at the age of 113

World’s oldest man” Masazo Nonaka, who was born just two years after the Wright brothers launched humanity’s first powered flight, died today at the age of 113.

According to Guinness World Records, Nonaka was born in July 1905, just months before Albert Einstein published his special theory of relativity. Guinness officially recognised Nonaka as the oldest living man after the death of Spaniard Francisco Nunez Olivera last year.  

“We feel shocked at the loss of this big figure. He was as usual yesterday and passed away without causing our family any fuss at all,” his granddaughter Yuko told Kyodo News.

Nonaka had six brothers and one sister, marrying in 1931 and fathering five children. He ran a hot spring inn in his hometown and in retirement enjoyed watching sumo wrestling on TV and eating sweets, according to local media. Japan has one of the world’s highest life expectancies and was home to several people recognised as among the oldest humans to have ever lived.  

They include Jiroemon Kimura, the longest-living man on record, who died soon after his 116th birthday in June 2013. The oldest verified person ever Jeanne Louise Calment of France died in 1997 at the age of 122, according to Guinness.
