Forget China – it's America's own economic system that's broken

Xi Jinping might possibly agree next weekend on further steps to bring down China’s trade imbalance with the US, giving Donald Trump a face-saving way of ending his trade war.

But Xi won’t agree to change China’s economic system. Why should he?
The American economic system is focused on maximizing shareholder returns. And it’s achieving that goal: on Friday, the S&P 500 notched a new all-time high.
But average Americans have seen no significant gains in their incomes for four decades, adjusted for inflation.

D.C. FONTANA FIRST FEMALE STAR TREK WRITER DIES AT 80

Ms. Fontana, who was part of the “Star Trek” universe from its early days, was best known for her work on Spock, the half-human, half-Vulcan Starfleet officer portrayed by Leonard Nimoy.
By Liam Stack
Dec. 3, 2019
D.C. Fontana, who helped craft the lore of the 1960s television series “Star Trek” and developed one of its signature characters, Spock, as the show’s first female writer, died on Tuesday at a hospital in Burbank, Calif. She was 80.
Her husband and only immediate survivor, Dennis Skotak, said the cause was cancer.
Ms. Fontana was part of the “Star Trek" universe from its early days, working alongside the show’s creator,
Gene Roddenberry, as a story editor and writer.
The original series, which had its premiere in 1966, introduced audiences to Captain Kirk, the United Federation of Planets and the Starship Enterprise. But Ms. Fontana was best known among fans for her work on Spock, the half-human, half-Vulcan Starfleet officer portrayed by Leonard Nimoy.
Spock was torn between the emotionality of his human side and a Vulcan’s zealous commitment to logic. That narrative tension powered much of the series and several of the feature films that followed.
“From Day 1 she was there helping Gene, in the early days, as a confidante,” Mr. Skotak said. “Captain Kirk always found a way to solve whatever problem they were facing — using Dorothy’s words in a lot of cases,” using Ms. Fontana’s given name.
In a 2013 interview with StarTrek.com , the franchise’s official website, Ms. Fontana said she thought her greatest contribution to the franchise had been “primarily the development of Spock as a character and Vulcan as a history/background/culture from which he sprang.”
She fleshed out the character’s back story as the child of a human mother and a Vulcan father while she was a story editor and associate producer for “Star Trek: The Animated Series” in the 1970s. She later wrote, with Mr. Roddenberry, the pilot that launched “Star Trek: The Next Generation” in 1987.
Dorothy Catherine Fontana was born on March 25, 1939, in Sussex, N.J. She was raised by a single mother in Totowa, N.J., and dreamed of becoming a novelist, she said in an interview with the Writers Guild Foundation in 2014.
After high school, she studied to become a secretary at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. She told the foundation that she had thought that clerical work would be a good day job for an aspiring novelist, but that her goals had changed when she became a secretary at Columbia Pictures’ television arm, which was based in New York.
“I was seeing scripts come across our desks for the various shows we had on the air at the time and I thought, ‘I can write this,’ like so many fools before me,” she said. “I had watched television for years and years and kind of got the idea of how stories were structured.”
When her boss died of a heart attack, leaving her jobless after just two months, she decided to move to California, in December 1959, to see if she could break into television writing. She achieved early success selling scripts to western series, which were popular in the early 1960s, including “The Tall Man,” “Shotgun Slade” and “Frontier Circus.”
Ms. Fontana told StarTrek.com in 2013 that her big break came when she was hired to be the secretary to Del Reisman, the associate producer of a show called “The Lieutenant.” She was soon reassigned to work for another producer, whose secretary had been hospitalized for two months because of complications from an appendectomy: Gene Roddenberry.
When “The Lieutenant” went off the air, Mr. Roddenberry sold “Star Trek” to Desilu Productions and asked Ms. Fontana to work for him there as a production secretary. But her role soon expanded.
“She would read the scripts and retype them and things like that,” Mr. Skotak said. “Then she thought, ‘I should try writing these, because I have some ideas.’”
Mr. Roddenberry recognized her ambition, as well as her record of writing for westerns, and asked her to pick which story she wanted to write from the production outline for “Star Trek’s” first season. Her first script, about the ship’s encounter with a mysterious human teenager who possesses strange powers, became the series’ second episode.
Ms. Fontana wrote for all three seasons of the original series. She later wrote for other science fiction shows, including “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “The Six Million Dollar Man” and “Babylon 5,” as well as influential series outside that genre like “Bonanza,” “Dallas” and “The Waltons.”
In her later years, Ms. Fontana taught at the American Film Institute. Mr. Skotak, her husband, a special effects designer, said she had continued to teach at the institute until just a few weeks before her death.
“She was a very, very tough lady,” he said. “She carried a phaser with her right up to the end.”
Speaking to StarTrek.com in 2013, Ms. Fontana reflected on what it was like to be a female writer in Hollywood in the 1960s. While working on “Star Trek,” she said, she did not realize that she had gone where no woman had gone before.
“At the time, I wasn’t especially aware there were so few female writers doing action adventure scripts,” she said. “There were plenty doing soaps, comedies, or on variety shows. By choosing to do action adventure, I was in an elite, very talented and very different group of women writers.”

Before you give TACHA 60 million Naira if she does not win BBnaija 2019, how many BOREHOLE have you built in your village?

The kind of celebrities we have in this #country are so #FUNNY,

someone just told me an up coming singer allegedly said he would give #TACHA 60 million Naira if she does not WIN #BBnaija2019,

abeg, help me ask that up coming singer how many borehole he has built in his own village through out all his #MUSIC career?

Is it up to half of that money he allegedly wants to give a #GIRL on #PepperDem?

This is why #America and #UK laugh at us in #Nigeria, imagine, with all the #POVERTY in #Naija,

these your so called celebrities will never HELP the poor or youth who have great business ideas, or even go to charity homes to give this millions,

so many villages in the #EAST lack clean drinking water, how many of these little things have you done to assist?

But, when it comes to criticizing #Buhari, they will be number one, what is wrong with us in Africa?

Kylian Mbappe equalled a record held by Barcelona’s Lional Messi when the French forward scored a goal and provided another to help Paris Saint-Germain get their Ligue 1 title defence to a flying start in a 3-0 win over Nimes on Sunday.

Brazilian star, Neymar, was missing from the PSG squad as goals from Edinson Cavani, Mbappe and Angel di Maria saw Thomas Tuchel’s men ease to victory at the  get their French league title defence underway with a 3-0 win over Nimes.

Mbappe’s strike was his 21st in the French top-flight in 2019, the most goals scored by a player in any of Europe’s top five leagues along with Messi.

Playing in the absence of Neymar, whose exit from PSG looks closer to becoming a reality,  the French champions made light work of Nimes, with Cavani breaking the deadlock at the Parc des Princes with a 24th minute penalty.

Mbappe doubled the advantage just before the hour mark from close range before turning provider as Di Maria found the bottom corner moments after coming off the bench for Pablo Sarabia with 20 minutes left in the encounter to go seal victory for the Red and Blues.

The result leaves PSG joint top of the French top-flight with rivals, Olympique Lyon, who also started their campaign with a 3-0 win over 10-man AS Monaco on Friday night.

Lyon will next face third-placed Angers at home on Friday while PSG will pay Stade Rennes a visit next Sunday, just two weeks after coming from a goal down to beat the French Cup holders 2-1 in the Trophees des Champions in China.

Do you think Mbappe can outscore every other top striker in Europe’s top five leagues this season?

How Regina Daniels And Her Mother, Rita Are Using Naira Marley To Remain Relevant

Regina Daniels and Naira Marley, two of Nigeria’s current controversial personalities are set to feature in a movie, ‘The Enemy I Know’, produced by Rita Daniels and Nigerians are here for it!

The month of April, 2019, was really buzzing as two major controversies were unleashed on Nigerians at the same time. Almost at the same time, Regina Daniels and Naira Marley were on the lips of almost every Nigerian who had access to the internet and gossip tabloids.

Nigerian rapper, Naira Marley, sparked a controversy after he stated that internet fraud aka Yahoo Yahoo, is not a crime. The singer in his post, wrote; ”If you know about slavery, you go know say Yahoo no be crime” His statement got the attention of many who condemned him including rapper and #ENDSARS campaign advocate, Ruggedman, who called him out to caution him not to mislead people on social media.

Nigerians were still chewing on this hard bit of news and trying to digest it when another brouhaha unfolded. This time, it was the news the beautiful young Nollywood actress, Regina Daniels was getting involved with a 59-year-old politician named Ned Nwoko, Nigerians went gaga. Their marriage stirred quite a lot of controversy. As a young budding actress, many expected her to  date series of young handsome men and then, finally ‘settle down’ with one of them. This was not the case and for this reason, many Nigerians condemned Regina Daniels’ marriage to Ned Nwoko.

Regina Daniels has faced a lot of bashing from Nigerians and even her supposed new family. The actress, however, has continued to shrug all these criticisms away as she is still living her best life. Nigerians were excited for Regina because most of the time, Nollywood actresses stop acting after their marriage. Only a few actresses would be able to make a comeback. Now, this may be due to family pressure or the husband’s unwillingness. On Thursday, June 13, 2019, after Regina’s official marriage to Ned, she took to her Instagram page to announce a new movie she would be acting in. However, she conveniently left out the name of the producer of the movie which turned out to be her mother.

Now, for Naira Marley, many Nigerians who had absolutely no idea who he was started hearing his name tossed here and there. The ”Issa Goal” crooner had dished out social media posts in support of internet fraud popularly known as ”Yahoo” and the lyrics of his song also promotes the act. Naira Marley during a Instagram live session, urged Nigerians to pray for internet fraudsters (Yahoo boys) saying they are the reason money circulates to the common man. The video immediately stirred reactions from Nigerians who described Marley as a disgrace and bad example to young Nigerians. However, a few Nigerians have supported Marley, saying that Yahoo boys are the reason some Nigerians can eat and survive.

His fame all came to an abrupt end when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  arrested him on his birthday. Not surprisingly, his arrest had to do with his support for Naira Marley. After 35 days of his arrest by EFCC and his court hearing/judgement, Naira Marley was finally released.

His fans, Marlians were thrilled and many took to their social media pages to celebrate the release of their icon. Many started wondering what the singer’s next step would be, little did Nigerians know his next step had already been determined by the ‘almighty’ Rita Daniels.

In what at first looked like a PR stunt,  Naira Marley was spotted receiving a warm reception after making an appearance on the set of a new movie. Surprisingly, the movie set turned out to be none other than Rita Daniels’ upcoming movie,’The Enemy I Know’. Renowned Nollywood stars like Regina Daniels, Desmond Elliot, Bolanle Ninalowo, amongst others were spotted.

The ‘Am I A Yahoo Boy’ singer landed his first movie role exactly seven days after his release from incarceration over alleged fraud charges. Without wasting so much time on the attention, Naira Marley found his way to the set to shoot his scenes in the movie alongside Bolanle Ninalowo and Regina Daniels. The movie scenes saw the singer and some other Nigerian actors chilling on a private jet with models clad in bikinis.

As all things are bound to happen at a point, Regina Daniels’ marriage has gone round and round the news and has eventually become stale news. However, as an entertainer, it is relevant for her to remain in the news, and what other way than to be featured in an highly anticipated movie alongside with the ‘ogas’ of Marlians himself?

Regina’s mother, Rita, knows her onions, and seems to be a very astute business woman. She timed the production of this movie alongside the controversies surrounding her daughter and dragged another controversial entity, Naira Marley into it. Naira Marley’s debut in Nollywood is as a result of Regina Daniels and her mum’s plan to make a top-grossing movie. The Daniels are currently shooting their movie with locations in Abuja and notable Nollywood stars locked on the set.

There are unconfirmed speculations that Rita Daniels’ wealthy son-in-law, Hon Ned Nwoko, will be taking the seat of an executive producer as he’s bankrolling the movie project.

To further gather awareness and publicity for the movie, Rita Daniels had strategically written Naira Marley into it to compliment the fame of rising actress, Regina Daniels. With the fame Regina Daniels is currently enjoying in the media and Nigerian entertainment space and the controversy surrounding the career and personality of Naira Marley, it’s easy to gamble on a movie featuring both celebs.

The move to feature Naira Marley also could be to create anticipation ahead of the movie release while riding on his controversial personality. This strategic move by Rita Daniels will see the movie, ‘The Enemy Within’ winning over some of the fans of the now famous singer to the cinema. According to sources close to Daniels, the movie is scheduled to be a straight to cinema movie before it will be released on CDs and sold to the general public.

I, however, have some questions for Rita Daniels. Since Naira Marley is an ardent supporter of internet fraud popularly referred to as ‘Yahoo-yahoo’, what is the aim of including him in the movie? Is she going to support ‘Yahoo-yahoo’ in the movie or speak againt the arrest by EFCC? Is Naira Marley’s inclusion just for clout?

Either way, Rita Daniels move has made this movie one of the most anticipated movies of 2019, and Nigerians can hardly wait for it’s release. As they say, publicity is publicity, whether good or bad. This is likely just Rita’s way of ensuring her movie does not fail.
